Why RV trip planning is different from regular route planning
Google Maps will tell you a 900-mile drive takes 13 hours. For a family in a Class A motorhome or towing a fifth wheel, that same trip might realistically span three full travel days — with 5–6 hours of driving each day, regular breaks for kids and dogs, longer fuel stops that take 20–30 minutes at a diesel island, and a hard goal of arriving at the campground before check-in closes.
This RV trip planner is built around those realities. Instead of optimizing for the fastest possible route, it asks how you like to travel: your preferred hours per day, your maximum before fatigue sets in, when you want to leave in the morning, and when you want to be parked for the night. Enter your origin and destination — or just total miles — and the planner divides the trip into realistic RV travel days with estimated departure and arrival times for each leg.
RV road trip planning also means thinking about fuel differently than a car trip. A diesel pusher stopping every 150–200 miles adds meaningful time to each travel day. Once you have your day-by-day plan here, use the RV Fuel Cost Calculator to estimate total fuel spend, gallons needed, and where your fuel stops will fall along the route.
If you already know your overnight stops and just want to understand how many driving hours each leg will realistically take, the RV Travel Time Calculator gives you a quick day-by-day breakdown without building a full itinerary.
Save your driving preferences — preferred hours, break frequency, fuel stop cadence, departure and arrival times — in How Do You Travel? and every tool will prefill from your profile automatically.

Add stops, not just endpoints
The best road trips aren't point-to-point. Add waypoints for campgrounds, lunch spots, and scenic overlooks — the planner calculates real driving time for each leg.
Pace for your family
Save your preferred drive hours, break frequency, and departure time in How Do You Travel? The planner prefills your pacing automatically on every trip.
Build in buffer days
Weather, mechanical issues, and "we have to stay one more day" moments are real. A buffer day between hard driving days keeps the trip from feeling like a race.
Use real road distances
This planner uses TomTom routing — actual road mileage, not straight-line distance. What looks like 200 miles on a map might be 240 miles of driving.
Pair with the Fuel Cost Calculator
Once you know your total mileage, run it through the Fuel Cost Calculator to estimate what you'll spend on gas or diesel for the whole trip.
Leave room to wander
The best moments on the road are unplanned. Build a realistic itinerary — then be willing to throw it out when something better comes along.
