Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park

Key Largo, Florida

"We e-biked here from Pennekamp and found a completely different side of Key Largo."

Why we recommend it

Kelsey and I hopped on our e-bikes at Pennekamp and rode over to explore the park, and it turned into a fun little Keys adventure. We dropped our $2-per-person admission in the box and headed down the trails with really no idea what we'd find. A lot of the trails were flooded during our visit, which made exploring on the bikes a little more interesting, but honestly that became part of the experience. It’s quiet, wild, and feels surprisingly removed from everything considering you’re still in Key Largo. If you have bikes with you at Pennekamp, this is a really cool side trip.

About this place

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park protects one of the largest remaining areas of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States. The park has several miles of trails through dense tropical vegetation that can be explored on foot or by bike. Entry is self-service, and when we visited it was just $2 per person. Trail conditions can vary considerably, especially after wet weather, with portions becoming flooded.
